DECEMBER 2, 2010

New Amsterdam's December Markets are always a festive affair and this year is shaping up to be the most stellar yet! Our 2010 season comes to an end on December 19 but don't worry: the next three Sundays will provide plenty of opportunities to stock up for holiday entertaining and gift-giving. __SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5

New York State Wine Market
Organized in collaboration with the New York State Wine and Grape Foundation, this week's market will feature a special celebration of our grape growing regions, with over 30 New York wineries joining the regular roster of market vendors! Vintners will be grouped by grape regions so you can sample the various New York terroirs. Stop by to sample the different vintages and discover new favorites. A selection from each winery will also be available for purchase by the glass starting at noon.

Wine and Oyster Tasting
In conjunction with the Wine Market, the New Amsterdam Market School will host a very special Wine and Oyster Tasting with Jim Clarke, the beverages director at Megu New York and a prolific wine writer, and Nellie Wu, the General Manager of Brooklyn's family owned and operated W&T Seafood and a frequent teacher of oyster education programs around the city.

Jim and Nellie will present a lively discussion of New York's wine regions, terroir, and grape varieties, then give an overview of six oyster varieties and how terroir (or "mere-oir") also influences their flavor and texture. Guests will enjoy a guided tasting of 6 delicious local wines paired with a dozen oysters from six unique growing regions.

The session runs from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at 224 Front Street. Tickets are $75 and all proceeds benefit the Market. Class size is very limited so purchase your tickets now!

Lore Artisan Goods
We are pleased to announce a collaboration with Lore Artisan Goods, a new enterprise promoting the manufacture of useful goods made to last. They will be showcasing a selection of beautifully crafted objects at the Market and the Market School, including clay cooking pots, porcelain enamel pots and storage bowls, handmade wooden utensils and cutting boards, horticultural knives, Creole coffee pots and more. Stop by the Market Desk for more information.

Watershed Agricultural Council
Also joining us this week is the Watershed Agricultural Council with a range of locally crafted wood products from the Catskills region. Some highlights include handmade wooden bowls from Katrok Woodworks; handmade spice racks and (just in time for the holidays) Christmas ornaments from Manifold Design; cutting boards and lazy susans from Catskill Craftsmen; and one-of-a-kind hand mirrors crafted from Hudson Valley black walnut with a birch bark backing from the Catskills by Judd Weisberg Designs. Be sure to visit their stall to find out more about our region's woodworkers, artisans, and sawmills.

Calling All Accordionists!
Do you play the accordion? Come mingle with fellow musicians while providing a unique soundtrack for our Wine Market! If you're interested in joining, e-mail us at accordions(at)newamsterdammarket.org for more information.

COMING UP IN DECEMBER
The season isn't over yet! We're continuing to confirm more vendors and events for our Coffee, Cocoa, and Citrus Market on December 12 so check our website often for updates! To date we have over 15 purveyors of coffee and cocoa, plus a full afternoon of coffee-related workshops and activities at the Market School. And stay tuned for more info on our year-end Solstice Market and Bell Ringing, as well as exciting news about next steps for the Market. .
